International Law Banning Cluster Munitions Goes Into Effect

From the ICBL (International Campaign to Ban Landmines):

    • The Convention on Cluster Munitions that bans the use of landmines worldwide, will enter into force on 1 August 2010, thus becoming binding international law.
    • The Convention not only bans future use and production of cluster munitions, but it also obliges nations to clear contaminated land within 10 years, destroy stockpiles of the weapon within 8 years, and provide comprehensive assistance to cluster munition survivors, their families and communities.
    • Since it was opened for signature in Oslo in December 2008, a total of 107 countries have signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions and 37 have ratified.
    • Cluster munitions and landmines kill and maim thousands of people, including children every year around the world.
