    World Mental Health Day

October 10th is the World Mental Health Day. Following information is from the WHO:

    • The WHO estimates that more than 75% of people with mental, neurological and substance use disorders -- including nearly 95 million people with depression living in developing countries do not receive any treatment or care.
    • An estimated one in four people globally will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime.
    • There are huge regional variations in the number of available psychiatrists from more than 10 per 100,000 to fewer than 1 per 300,000.
    • About 877,000 people die by suicide every year.
    • Most middle and low-income countries devote less than 1% of their health expenditure to mental health. Consequently mental health policies, legislation, community care facilities, and treatments for people with mental illness are not given the priority they deserve.
